API 1169 recertification and renewal

An API 1169 certificate is valid for 3 years, and renewal means recertification every 3 years through the ICP Portal, from 90 days before to 90 days after expiry, with at least 20% of your last 3 years on pipeline-related work; every 6 years it includes an open-book online web quiz of 25 questions in 4 hours on changes to RP 1169. That quiz is the only test in the cycle, and failing it twice sends you back to the full exam.

Built on the API 1169 Body of Knowledge and effectivity sheet API publishes · checked October 2026

Cycle

Every three years, and what each turn asks

Renewal does not happen on its own. You file it in the ICP Portal, and every second time you file it the web quiz comes with it. Read the table by its last column first: the exam you sat appears once, and after that it only comes back if the quiz goes wrong.

The renewal cycle as API's program page describes it (year 0 = certification)
YearWhat the renewal asksFull exam?
0Pass the exam; the certificate is issuedYes, once
3Application in the ICP Portal, fee, the 20% work ruleNo
6Everything at year 3, plus the open-book web quizOnly after two failed quiz attempts
9Application, fee, the 20% work ruleNo
12Web quiz again, with the application and feeSame rule as year 6

Of the four renewals in your first twelve years, two carry the quiz. The rule behind the table is on the API 1169 program page.

Four renewal claims, two survive

Course pages and crew-trailer advice about renewal come as four versions of the same sentence. Treat them like an answer set: strike the two that fail on a single word, then check the survivors against the source.

Filing the renewal, stake by stake

  1. Find your expiry date

It is on your certificate and in the ICP Portal. Count back 90 days and put that date in your calendar the day the certificate arrives: that is when the window opens.

  2. Rebuild the last 36 months

Twenty per cent of three years is a little over seven months of pipeline-related work. List each project with dates and your role while you still have the paperwork; reconstructing three seasons from memory at renewal time is slow.

  3. Check whether this is a quiz renewal

Count your renewals. The second, fourth and sixth carry the web quiz; the first, third and fifth do not.

  4. File and pay before the expiry date

The 90 days after expiry are a spare, not a plan. Filing before the date keeps you off the late-fee line and leaves room to fix a rejected entry.

  5. Watch the portal for the result

Certificates are issued digitally (since June 2025), with results in the ICP Portal in about 3 business days, per API as of October 2026; see API ICP: policies.

Treat the expiry date as the deadline and the 90 days after it as an expensive spare.

The six-year web quiz

25 questions, open book, 4 hours, every 6 years; failing it twice sends you back to the full exam. It is built on changes to API RP 1169, the recommended practice the certification takes its number from, so the edition you open matters more than anything you remember from the exam. Check which edition API lists for recertification on the API 1169 program page before you start.

Open book changes where your time goes, not how the wrong answers are built. Read the options before the stem: they tell you which clause you are hunting for, so you open the document once instead of twice. Strike the options that name the wrong party or the wrong phase of construction, then settle the last two against the text in front of you.

Fee

What renewal costs, 2027 first

If you renew in 2027: $315 for members and $445 for non-members (recertification, 2027). Renewing before January 1, 2027: $310 for members and $435 for non-members (recertification, 2026). Both lines come from API ICP: schedules and fees.

Recertification, 2027
$315 for members and $445 for non-members (recertification, 2027)
Recertification, 2026
$310 for members and $435 for non-members (recertification, 2026)
Full exam, 2027 (starting over)
$445 for members and $590 for non-members (initial certification, 2027 fee schedule)

Renewing against starting over. Source: API ICP: schedules and fees; checked October 2026.

Set the last line against the first. A lapse or a second failed quiz costs more than the renewal and adds a three-hour sitting at a test center on top.

If the certificate lapses

The window closes 90 days after your expiry date. Past that point the renewal route is closed, so plan for the full exam and confirm the details with API before you budget. Anyone applying now sits a 2027 window: April 9 to 30, 2027 (apply by February 4); August 6 to 27, 2027 (apply by June 4); December 3 to 24, 2027 (apply by September 30), per API as of October 2026; see API ICP: schedules and fees. Moves, deadlines and late-application costs are laid out on the exam dates page.

The exam you would be sitting covers five categories. API publishes no weights; the bars below are our estimate of each one's share, and they are where the study guide starts.

  • 1. Inspection & management35–45%
  • 2. Front-end construction8–12%
  • 3. Installation construction25–36%
  • 4. Back-end construction15–22%
  • 5. Post-construction3–10%
Estimated share of the exam, not API's weighting: API publishes no category weights. Track runs 0–50%; the tick is the midpoint.

Before your window opens

  • Mark the date 90 days before expiry in your calendar the day the certificate arrives.
  • Log pipeline-related work as you go: 20% of 36 months is a little over seven.
  • The second, fourth and sixth renewals carry the web quiz.
  • In the quiz, read the options first; the trap is the earlier edition's wording.
  • Budget the 2027 recertification line, and keep the site overview handy if the full exam comes back into play.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to renew an API 1169 certification?

If you renew in 2027: $315 for members and $445 for non-members (recertification, 2027), per API as of October 2026. Renewing before January 1, 2027: $310 for members and $435 for non-members (recertification, 2026). Late fees apply after the expiry date. Check API ICP: schedules and fees in the month you file.

How long does API 1169 certification last?

3 years. You then recertify through the ICP Portal, inside a window that runs from 90 days before to 90 days after the expiry date.

Do you have to retake the API 1169 exam to renew?

No. Each renewal is an application with the 20% pipeline-work rule, and every 6 years it adds the open-book web quiz. The full exam comes back if you fail that quiz twice, and it is the path to plan for if the certificate lapses.

What is on the API 1169 Recertification Web Quiz?

25 questions, open book, 4 hours, every 6 years; failing it twice sends you back to the full exam. It is built on changes to API RP 1169, so work from the current edition and watch for options that repeat the earlier wording.

What happens if my API 1169 certificate expires?

The renewal window stays open for 90 days after the expiry date, with late fees. Past that point the renewal route is closed: plan for the full exam and confirm the details with API on the API 1169 program page.
